Henry spent his early years in Hong Kong, living in a home that also functioned as a family-run garment factory. Seeing things being put together and created strongly influenced his early years, as well as watching his older brother draw and make models. He started drawing at age 4, sketching toys, cars and family members, as well as making paper airplanes, kites, and plastic models. He drew toys from his imagination. Henry would often take his toys apart to study how they worked and then reassemble or repurpose them.
The garment industry was a key influence in Henry’s life - at the age of 12 he was a tailor’s assistant in his father’s shop. This shaped his appreciation of line, form and construction. He created original designs for bike clothing, handbags, and other clothing pieces. And this experience led him to develop his discerning "designer's eye" for image consulting.
In Henry’s teenage years, he remembers being strongly influenced by the first technical running shoes developed by Nike and Adidas (Nike Waffle and Adidas 76 SL shoe). He was fascinated by the video explaining how the shoe cushioned the heel strike and made for a more natural stride. This was the beginning of his strong appreciation that great performance results from a marriage between technology and good design. He began drawing innovative "stuff" with a biomechanical interface, including running shoes, bikes and bike components, skateboards, ski boots, etc. He naturally used his mind's eye to understand objects three dimensionally and express them visually through his strong conceptual drawings.
Henry’s life-long passion for cycling and bicycle design has led him to provide bike repair services, assemble custom bikes, work in a bike shop, as well as design innovative bicycles and bike components.
In terms of formal education, Henry earned a Math/Computer Science degree from Wateloo University in Canada. However, he continued to develop his creativity through various art and design courses. On a part-time basis, he earned a Graphic Design certificate and postgraduate Multimedia Design diploma. His projects ranged from illustration, rendering and painting, to kiosk, digital game design, and other multimedia and graphic design projects. Most recently, Henry continued to indulge his passion for industrial design by taking a Transport Design course at Humber College and a Digital Painting course at Sheridan College. Henry's goal is to fulfill his life's dream of being an Industrial Designer.
Henry’s mission as a designer is to create innovative designs that inspire, beautify and help others to live more fully. He is strongly interested in the concepts of human interaction and sustainability He is also very interested in pushing the envelope of what's possible, as well as designing for fun and entertainment. Henry has used his creative talents to teach drawing and design to both children and adults and feels privileged to share his passion.
On a personal note, Henry enjoys being physically active by cycling, playing and coaching ultimate Frisbee, playing tennis, blading, surfing and snowboarding. He also loves to play guitar, travel, and learn about other cultures. He has an open perspective on the world and firmly believes that we are all connected and that positive energy can create amazing possibilities in life!
